        About The Sanctuary

        About Liberty Acres

Liberty Acres is a 22 acre sanctuary devoted to enriching the lives of animals as they wait for a "forever family". We strive to provide a loving and homelike environment to senior, geriatric, disabled and  hospice dogs. These dogs come from other shelters where time is limited and resources are in short supply. We offer these "death row"  dogs a place where they can get back to health and be re-homed. Some become permanent residents due to health issues. Check out our Sanctuary Citizen section.

        Accommodations for our Dogs

While at Liberty Acres, dogs enjoy accommodations in cozy, tiny homes with access to a doggy door and a fenced in area.  The houses are air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter. You will find the dogs lounging about on a couch or snuggled up in a bed. There are trained staff that live on the property, therefore the dogs never feel alone.  Daily Activities for the dogs include: hikes in the woods, off leash running in the 6 acre fenced area and a 3 acre pond.

        The Cat Cabin

The Sanctuary is currently working on new enclosures for our feline friends. These new spaces at the main house or Cat Cabin will allow the cats to live in colonies and have connecting outdoor enclosures. This will also give them comfy furniture to lounge in and climbing areas for exercise. We are also working to improve the lives of our feral cat friends here at the Sanctuary.

Meet some of our Sanctuary Citizens

        Elaine

        Elaine

        Elaine

Elaine is a dog who has a checkered past. This spunky Coonhound has been around the block and then some. Elaine is a good dog for those whom she chooses to befriend but their numbers are few. She spends her time with her furry BFF Winnie. She doesn't trust new people and therefore will get to spend her last years with those she loves here at the Sanctuary.

        Winnie

        Elaine

        Elaine

Winnie was raised in a feral dog colony. She knows very little of human touch or interaction. She has come a long way here at the Sanctuary but still prefers her doggy friends over the two legged kind. She spends her days running through the woods and snuggling with her BFF Elaine. We love our quirky addition to the Sanctuary and are happy to ensure she is happy for as long as she will have us.

        Rusty

        Elaine

Oh our Rusty is a special fellow at just 4 years old. He does well at the Sanctuary with people he knows and a regular schedule. Rusty is a great boy in the right environment. Rusty has anxiety issues which causes some bad behaviors but he is happy at the Sanctuary. Rusty has been passed around a bit in his past but is most comfortable in the stability of the Sanctuary. Though he has issues meeting new people he is great with dogs of all sizes and personalities which makes him an awesome addition to the Sanctuary pack. We love our big red quirky guy.

        Miss Maggie

Miss Maggie came to the Sanctuary after being at another shelter for 2 years. She was adopted out many times to different types of homes but was always returned for escaping. It seems Maggie was very selective of where she wanted to stay. When she arrived at the Sanctuary we always monitored her while she was outside. We were waiting for that time she would decide to run. After awhile we started to realize she wasn't even trying to get out. She loves the 6 acre fenced area which is where she loves to hunt things, play in the woods, go frogging in the mud hole, or digging in the dirt chasing moles. Though she has become more social here at the Sanctuary she freaks out and refuses to get in a car to leave with anyone. She has decided this is her home and it's where she never wants to leave. After having her for these last few years we couldn't imagine the Sanctuary without her.

        Floyd

Floyd is an extra large Coonhound who is afraid of his own shadow. Floyd is a really sweet guy but he gets upset when meeting new people or any changes. Floyd is happy here at the Sanctuary and loves his housemates. He also loves playing in the woods.

        Sparkles

Sparkles came to the Sanctuary underweight and full of cancer. We were told she had months to live. She surprised us all by gaining weight and is going on over a year here at the Sanctuary. She is not only living she is thriving here.

        Reuben

        Reuben

Reuben came to us with the intent that we would find him an adopter. Unfortunately after a year of searching he got little to no interest. Reuben was recently diagnosed with cancer. It was meant to be that he live out his life with us here at the Sanctuary.

        Dixie

        Reuben

Dixie and her sister Delta came to us in 2022 after their owner had passed and they ended up in a shelter.  They were oh so sad but we were fortunate that a foster stepped up to ensure their happiness. They lived together with the family while we searched for a permanent home for about a year. When Delta passed away we knew that the only place Dixie would be happy is the foster home so they are now a forever foster for her.

        Aggie

        Aggie

Aggie was found wandering the streets and rescued by a very kind couple. She is a very elderly gal. The vet guessed in her late teens. She is sweet but a little spicey of an old gal. She does have some dementia but it does not stop her from giving the other dogs what for. Itś evident that she was loved at one time but she is the only one who really knows her story.

As a Sanctuary we take in many animals that would be euthanized by other shelters due to an illness or injury. These animals come in with various medical problems that are costly to treat, however we know they are worth it. You can help us save these animals that would otherwise be forgotten.

Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases. Neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems. By spaying and neutering your animals you are also helping to prevent the overpopulation of companion animals. It just makes sense.

        To those we have lost

"Gone from our lives but never our hearts"

To sit with those who truly need you, those that everyone else has forgotten. To grasp their paw and stroke their coat. To talk of silly stories with them as you hide the pain of loss. To calm your hands from shaking and keep breathing through the tears. To hold dear every memory of love as you let them go. Giving them the same dedication they gave to us, without question. Sleep well and run free our furred friends. Til we meet again at Rainbow Bridge.
